I have done a bit of searching and it appears that the "ascended essentials pack" does not unlock the special slots, only the "ascended essentials edition" will unlock them. Problem is, the 'edition' is no longer available for purchase, so basically those extra slots just stare at me laughing every time I play. Or am I mistaken and there is a way to currently unlock the 'special slots?
