If it clearly states that it is a full hdtv, then the res is 1080p. Have you also checked the manual technical specs?? That should also mention the max supported res. Also how are you connecting the tv to your pc?
I am unsure about nvidia's cpanel (if you're using the 8800) but there should be an option to select an hdtv under the display section see if that enables you to use the native res of the tv.

ah.. If only text seems to be affected then you might want to try turning on clear type text in windows. Also try fiddling with the hdmi input settings on the tv's settings menu (specify pc mode or something like that) ..speaking of which, is the tv connected via vga, dvi or dvi to hdmi?
